    Therapeutic Massage is a type of therapy where the therapist uses his or her hands to cause beneficial changes (Manual Therapy) in a clients muscles and other soft tissue. The therapy is performed by a Licensed Massage Therapist, which is the highest level of licensure in the state of Maryland. This allows us to work with your local doctor or any medical professional in the country as well as take insurance. Therapeutic Massage uses a wide selection of techniques to address many common issues.

Massage Therapy Technique

    There are more types of massage than it is useful to list and new techniques are invented all the time. We can organize most of the techniques used at Baltimore Orthopedic Massage in to common styles. While a typical massage session might use all of the styles listed it is help full to look at them this way.

    Deep TissueIdeal for very tight muscles and people who want a firmer massage. You can read our post about deep tissue massage for more information and its effects. In general this type of therapy is favored by people who like to relax with deep strong pressure and by people who have aches in deeper tissues. while it is nice to have a firm massage, it does not have to hurt. We are able to reach even the deepest muscles without much discomfort.

    Myofascial Release– A gentle and very effective technique for chronic pain sufferers. It uses slow short movements to gently starch the connective tissue holding the muscles tight. Low back pain and knee problems are two issues addressed by Myofascial Release. Unlike Swedish and Deep Tissue Massage this type of massage askes the client to take an active role in treatment. Often by moving slightly or breathing a certain way. This theraputic massage is also the go-to technique for trouble shooting “mystery pain“. It is most often used to manage long term pain and disfunction.

It is often used in together with Sports Massage Techniques. It focuses on the natural reflexes your own body uses to relax a muscle. Like Myofascial Release you will be asked to take a active role in your therapy.

    Oncology– A very gentle massage designed to comfort cancer patients while they receive other treatments. It does not treat cancer but it does help manage systems of chemotherapy, radiation and other difficulties. Most often done at home or at our office in Bel Air in some cases we can preform massage during other treatments.
